Yesterday the assessment by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is that the health benefits from vaccination are marginally greater than the potential known harms. However, the margin of benefit is considered too small to support universal vaccination of healthy 12 to 15 year olds at this time.

Professor Wei Shen Lim, Chair of COVID-19 Immunisation for the JCVI, said:

Children aged 12 to 15 years old with underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk of severe COVID-19 should be offered COVID-19 vaccination. The range of underlying health conditions that apply has recently been expanded.

For otherwise healthy 12 to 15 year old children, their risk of severe COVID-19 disease is small and therefore the potential for benefit from COVID-19 vaccination is also small. The JCVI’s view is that overall, the health benefits from COVID-19 vaccination to healthy children aged 12 to 15 years are marginally greater than the potential harms.

Taking a precautionary approach, this margin of benefit is considered too small to support universal COVID-19 vaccination for this age group at this time. The committee will continue to review safety data as they emerge.
Despite ministers always saying that they follow the science with regard to Covid policies it is widely believed that they will go against this advice and start offering vaccinations to children aged 12 to 15.

All eyes are now the four chief medical officers advising the government, namely Prof Chris Whitty (England), Dr Frank Atherton (Wales), Dr Gregor Smith (Scotland) and Dr Michael McBride (Northern Ireland).

Arguments for ignoring the JCVI advice are mainly about vaccinating younger children could reduce disruption in schools and help keep infection rates down as winter approaches.

Vaccinations at any group are not mandatory and a lot of parents will be against their young children being jabbed.

I have discussed the pros and cons with my son and let him give me his opinion too. I am leaving the decision to him purely on the basis that there is not enough information out there as to whether it affects fertility. I would hate to think I forced him to do something that affected him in later life and to be honest if he didn't want it, do I really force a 12 year old child I for sure will not be pinning him down
    Jane is certainly against this
All those kids who had covid now have natural immunity which is long lasting. My friend who had it 16 months ago still has antibodies. Covid is no danger to kids ... in NSW, Australia out of 3000 kids jabbed 2 died, that's 1 in 1500. #NotInMyName
Nila reports differently from the US
I am surrounded by people in the medical field. Most neighbors are physicians, Nurse Practitioners, pharmacists etc . The ones who have children aged 12+ have had them vaccinated and stand behind that decision. The children have not had any side reactions other than a sore arm and can help protect adults and avoid Covid outbreaks within the school. Also, I have a neighbor who works in pediatrics and was told they are waiting for approval for the Covid shot to be given as young as 2 months of age
Will we follow Sweden who only vaccinate under 16s who are vulnerable or other countries like Italy, Spain, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark who do offer the vaccine to those aged 12 and over.

Ireland has now started looking at vaccinating children. The portal to register a child aged 12-15 for a vaccine opened on August 11 and has had over 100,000 appointments made and over 75,000 of them were within the first 48 hours alone.
There are an estimated 248,000 children in this age cohort. In the first weekend of vaccinations, 30,000 children received a dose. The rollout is ongoing.

France was one of the first to start offering vaccines to those 12 and over back in June and is continuing with its controversial "health pass" which will soon be needed to enter certain venues such as cinemas and restuarants. Israel goes much further and is to require covid tests for children as young as three to enter schools, swimming pools, hotels or gyms as infections surge despite extensive adult vaccinations.

A decision on whether to offer vaccinations to children aged 12 to 15 is expected in the next few days.
